INTRODUCTION
The global mergers & acquisitions (M&A) landscape is still a positive environment at present, despite that fact that M&A deal value (although not deal numbers) in 2016 has failed to keep pace with the record levels seen over the past two years. Looking back, 2015 was indeed a blockbuster year for dealmaking. After years of sporadic activity and lingering doubt, last year finally saw the M&A market blow away the last vestiges of concern stemming from the financial crisis. The improvement seen in 2015 followed hot on the heels of an uptick in 2014, and for many it appeared that the M&A industry had finally moved on. The total value of global M&A reached a new benchmark of $5.05 trillion in 2015, according to Dealogic – up 38 percent on 2014’s $3.67 trillion and surpassing the previous record of $4.61 trillion set in 2007, the halcyon days before the financial crisis.
